What is insomnia?
Insomnia is a sleep disorder that can cause difficulty falling asleep, problems staying asleep, frequently waking up during the night, or waking up early before getting a full night’s sleep. Insomnia is a common problem that may coexist with underlying conditions like depression or anxiety.
Chinwe helps you find the root cause of bothersome insomnia and ways to achieve better sleep to improve your quality of life.
What can cause insomnia?
Insomnia has numerous causes and risk factors. Examples include anxiety, ongoing stress, depression, excessive travel, or a late night work schedule. Caffeine, alcohol, eating snacks or heavy meals before sleep, and staring at blue light before bed can also contribute to insomnia.
Certain medical conditions may cause insomnia, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or asthma. You may take certain medicines, have sleep apnea, or have a family history of insomnia which all increase your risk of sleep disorders.
Sleep patterns often change with age, causing hormone fluctuations and changes in physical activity during the day.
How might insomnia affect my health?
Quality sleep is an important part of staying healthy and reducing the risk of illnesses, obesity, and diseases. Untreated insomnia can also cause decline in performance at school or work and increase the chance of accidents while driving or working.
Insomnia affects both your mental and physical health. It can cause high blood pressure, anxiety, depression, and other medical or mental health concerns.
Getting the right amount of high-quality sleep allows your mind and body to perform at their best.
